Lockheed Martin will build a research and development center in Melbourne, Australia, according to the company.
The Science Technology Engineering Leadership and Research Laboratory will explore multiple fields, including hypersonics, autonomy, robotics and C4ISR, the firm said in a news release. It will be the first multi-disciplinary lab established outside the United States by Lockheed Martin.
The company will invest an initial $13 million over three years on the facility, which is scheduled to open in early 2017.
"The decision to establish a multi-disciplinary R&D facility in Australia was partly based on Lockheed Martin's own track record of research and development success with Australia's Defense Science and Technology Group and Australian universities over the last 20 years," said Keoki Jackson, Lockheed Martin's chief technology officer.
