Through the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s
NSG Mapping Enclave
, known as NOME, crowdsourcing campaigns have had a positive effect on NGA’s humanitarian relief and disaster response and special mission planning efforts. Those efforts include support to first responders during the 2015 Nepal earthquake, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and the crisis in South Sudan. NGA’s use of volunteered geographic information and NOME is challenging conventional geospatial collection and dissemination methods, reducing costs and enhancing mission planning and performance across the intelligence community, Department of Defense, countless disaster relief organizations and countries throughout the world.
