Boeing has been awarded a $9.7 million contract to provide additional combat survival radios.

The contract calls for 336 hand-held Combat Survivor Evader Locator (CSEL) radios, to join the more than 54,000 already in use, according to a Boeing news release. The radios transmit position, location and situational information via line-of-sight voice, data and beacon, or over-the-horizon communications.

The new radios will include the latest configuration, including non-GPS beacons and secure texting. Base stations will receive upgraded hardware and software to improve communication speeds and more network protection.
