Israel Aerospace Industries has installed a new radar on Israeli Navy missile boats.

The ELM-2258 ALPHA, or Advanced Lightweight Phased Array, has been fitted to the Navy's Sa'ar 4.5-class missile ship. The radar is scheduled for operational sea trials, according to an IAI news release.

The Israeli Navy has ordered 11 radars for Sa'ar 4.5 and 5 vessels, with two to be delivered in 2017.

"The ALPHA is a rotating [active electronically scanned array] radar, capable of producing a large number of simultaneous beams for maritime and aerial targets, and to provide a high quality situation picture in the most extreme marine environment," IAI said. "The radar can perform several tasks at the same time, such as: detection and classification of naval targets, tracking of a large number of targets, and integration into guided missile systems for defense and attack."

According to IAI, the technology can be installed on both small and medium-sized vessels, including corvettes, missile ships and medium-sized patrol ships.
