The Navy is scaling back its plans for a new dual-band radar in favor of enterprise air surveillance radar (EASR), the culmination of a strategy change that has been underway for some time, according to a report in Defense News.

The Navy had already decided to cut the DBR program to just two ships, according to Rear Adm. Thomas Moore, program executive officer for aircraft carriers. Now it has halved even that plan, with the DBR to installed only on the USS Gerald R. Ford. Originally the DBR was to installed on all Ford-class cariers and Zumwalt-class destroyers.

EASR, under development by both Northrop Grumman and Raytheon, will be installed on the second ship of the Ford class, the John F. Kennedy, Moore said. That will reduce the Kennedy's cost by about $180 million.
